Spotlight Christmas Bauble Fabric

We love our family tradition of creating matching outfits, especially for Christmas!  When Spotlight invited us to showcase some of their latest Christmas fabric, we had no doubt we would create something in line with this tradition.

We explored the range of Christmas fabrics available at Spotlight.  We looked at the range of Nordic cream coloured bases, fun modern Australian prints and traditional Christmas looks.  We looked back at some previous Christmas Fabrics so we could choose something with a different colour and print to ones we have used before.

Fabric: Spotlight Christmas Bauble Quilting Cotton

We chose the Novelty Bauble Christmas fabric in the green colourway, featuring yellow bells.  Being a quilting cotton, it is a 145gsm cotton at 112cm wide.

This quilting cotton gave us a range of options for what we could create.  Being conscious that our Christmas can be very hot in Australia, we wanted a breathable material that was easy to wear and sew!

You can find this fabric in-store at Spotlight or check out their website here

We also located matching Gutterman thread and Birch dress zipper to match the dark green background, also available in Spotlight Stores.

Pattern: Simplicity 3131

Lauren chose a new Simplicity pattern S3131 for her Christmas dress in this vibrant Spotlight fabric.

This is a dress pattern that has a fitted bodice and angled bust darts.  We cut the bodice on the fold so we did not break up the fabric print. But we can see a striped angled version in our future, though.  It has a pleated skirt that we added pockets to (because pockets are the best!).

The shoulder straps have a back button detail, which we used a red button to create a contrast. We decided to use a welt zipper, as we prefer this over an invisible zipper, particuarly for cotton dresses,

We chose to create the longer line skirt so we could move around easily on a warm day.

This pattern is available as a paper pattern at Spotlight instore or online here

Fergus' Dog Bandana

Fergus couldn’t miss out on a matching outfit! So we created him a bandana with the offcuts of our dress fabrics. If you are looking for a pattern for a dog bandana project, check out this free one on the Spotlight website

Pattern: McCall's 8482

McCall's 8482 Sewing Pattern for skirt and top

Erin chose to create a set for this year’s Christmas outfit rather than a dress. She was looking for a pattern that was easy to wear with elastic finishes and gathering to showcase the Spotlight cotton fabric.

She picked McCall’s 8481, which is a two-piece set pattern with a crop top that we lengthened with puff sleeves and a high neckline with elastic at the sleeves, waist and neck.

We made the longer line, view D Skirt, which is a pull-on asymmetric tiered skirt with a elastic waist.

You can find this pattern in store at Spotlight or online as a paper or PDF here

You might feel like this is a familiar pattern, and you would be correct. Erin made this before, which you can check out here

Pattern: McCall's 8044

The matching Christmas outfits would not be completed without a shirt for James. Specifically, a long-sleeve McCall’s 8044.  This is his go-to pattern, and he prefers the long sleeves that he can roll up in the Summer. This pattern is available at Spotlight instore or on their website here
