Christmas Me Made Outfits 2024

This year, we took our Christmas outfit game to a whole new level — well, more accurately, Audrey did. Every year, our family Christmas dinner is a chance to channel our Nan’s tradition of creating festive outfits for the whole family. It’s a nod to her legacy, and we’ve kept the tradition alive with something handmade for the occasion.

But this September, Audrey threw down the ultimate challenge. She casually said, “You know how you all wear matching outfits? What if ALL of us matched this year?” Game. On.

We dove into fabric hunting mode, shared a few options in the family group chat, and the clear winner emerged: a cheerful red and white gingham from Birch. Next up, everyone shared their vision for their Christmas ensemble, and we hunted down the perfect patterns on the Sewdirect Australia website.

What followed was a marathon of stitching: 10 garments, a mix of our tried-and-true patterns and some exciting new styles. By the time we were done, the sewing machines deserved a rest as much as we did!
Wishing you a Christmas as merry and love-filled as our matching outfits!🎅🎁✨

Green Gingham from Minerva

Green was our Grandad’s favourite colour and it was an influence when we were putting together our Two Sewing Sisters branding. He was such a champion of our Nan, our Mum and ourselves. He was known to travel to town with a swatch of fabric to find the matching thread for a project for Nan and help her mark the hems of her skirts.

Rose & Hubble 100% Cotton Poplin Fabric

When we spied the Rose & Hubble 100% Cotton Poplin Fabric in apple green and white on the Minerva website we knew we wanted to create ourselves some Two Sewing Sisters “uniforms”. Being a poplin it is a printed cotton fabric that is 112cm wide and light to medium weight.

Vogue 9237

Erin created a version of Vogue 9237 towards the end of Summer and loved it! She has since created 2 more, taking the count of #v9237 to three including this green gingham version. The dress is a loose-fitting pullover dress that is secured with a keyhole button closure at the centre back. We created the short sleeve version and the main draw card the ruffled hem back panel. This pattern is available in Australia from Sewdirect Australia and can also be found on the Minerva website here.

McCall’s 8098

For the second garment, we created a three-quarter view of McCall’s 8098. This had come off the back of the full-length pair in the blue polished cotton and we wanted to try out the shorter style. The pants have an elastic waist, flat centre panel and gathered-tier outer layers. For the shorter length, there is a gathered panel all around the bottom. The poplin sat much better in the floaty dress than the pants however they will still get a great lot of wear for our sewing days.

This pattern is available in Australia from Sewdirect Australia and can also be found on the Minerva website here.

Fergus Bowtie

From the gingham scraps, we couldn’t help ourselves but had to use every inch! We made our studio dog Fergus a matching bowtie! He wears it very proudly! We created this with band for the collar (interfaced for stability) with a D ring for his lead and buckle then stitched. We then stitched on the bow and wrapped around a band to form the centre of the bowtie effect.
