Which comes first; the fabric or the pattern? This project was a series of fates, the release of the pattern Vogue 2055 and Lauren fabric hunting in Paris and finding the amazing material. They were not sought out but simply seemed perfect for each other.
Fabric
This beautiful fabric came from Sacrés Coupons in Paris. At this fabric store, the pieces are precut and labelled with their meterage, so it is a matter of fate if there is enough. It is a blend of natural fibres that was perfect for a winter coat. Although the visual weight came from the boucle finish it was lighter than what is needed in a European winter so we padded it with two layers of wool batting in the body and one layer in the sleeve.
Pattern: Vogue 2055
Vogue 2055 is a loose-fitting, lined trench coat style that has a collar, collar stand, with epaulettes detail on the shoulder of a two-piece raglan sleeve. It has a storm flap on one side of the front and across the back. There are welt pockets and a self belt with belt loops.
The only variation we made to this pattern was to remove the bands around the arm as we didn’t feel it necessary with such detailed fabric. We were also concious of how thick the fabric is and how the bands might pucker the arm so we left them off.
Finished Project
We finished the jacket with grey buttons at the centre front, and the solid button feature showcased the double-breasted design. The button holes were really challenging in this fabric with the wadding so some had to be mended by hand after a couple of wears.
She was weighty in the end up worth if for a Eurpoe winter. This is Lauren wearing the jacket in Switzerland on Christmas day.

The jacket was the hero and while Lauren was away for 8 weeks it neede some matching pieces to be worn with it. Here is the wardrobe we created for the trip.
