Butterick 6556 Tiered Skirt Cherry Pink Poplin from Minerva

A few months ago, I saw a dress on Instagram that had a striped gathered skirt, with a horizontal band in between each layer. While the “baby-doll” bodice of the dress wouldn’t suit me, I loved the skirt!

In true sewing spirit, we were inspired to take what we like about the design and make our own version ready for the European summer.

Fabric: Minerva Core Range 100% Cotton Poplin Fabric Cherry Pink

This is the Minerva Core Range 100% Cotton Poplin Fabric Cherry Pink. In person, the fabric looks more red than pink. Being 148cm wide and 100% cotton, it was very easy to both cut and sew. Find out more about the fabric here.

Pattern: Butterick 6556

The bodice is Butterick 6556 – one of our fabric Gertie patterns. We amended the bodice by removing the “v” in the centre front bodice. To make the bows, we extended the straps to be very long so they could be tied into bows. The shape of the shoulder straps in the pattern is curved, however we straightened the shoulder straps for both fitting and visual reasons (given the striped fabric).

Holiday Wardrobe: Indigo Bias Skirt from Mood Fabrics

Exploring London in our first bias-cut skirt! We are late to the party on bias-cut skirts, but we see more in our future.  For the pattern, we explored a few options and landed on the Indigo skirt from Mood Fabrics. It looked quite full in the hem when we first cut it but bias being bias it sat beautifully.  The fabric weight was key and this deep green from Drapers Fabric fit the bill.

The top is the Grace Top by Friday Pattern Company in black jersey knit from Fabric Deluxe. A nice cowl neck detail to compliment the shape of the skirt.

Holiday Wardrobe: Adrift Shift by Gracie Steel in Faces Canvas from Spotlight

Erin and James are off jet-setting to Europe this month so this was a fantastic excuse to plan a capsule travel wardrobe.  We will share some of the makes on the blog but also follow along on our Instagram for all the outfit updates.  The first make featuring on the trip in London is the Adrift Shift by Gracie Steel in Faces Canvas from Spotlight.

Fabric Stores in Paris France

Ah Paris! A fashion capital and a wealth of wonderful fabric stores!

In many of the stores in Montmartre near Sacré-Cœur the fabrics are already cut into length of 3m meters and folded on tables. They are sorted into fibre types with silks, cottons and wools grouped together. Each piece of fabric has a tag attached that lists the fibre composition, the width, meterage and the price.

Here are just a few we have frequented to help you explore and see the full map below

Coupons Saint Pierre (Les Coupons de Saint Pierre)

This fabric store has all precut lengths of 3 meters with an amazing selection of silks. This is the kind of store to let the fabric all to you, explore the piles, pick the pieces you like, and circle back around because the fabrics on top will have changed thanks to the other fabric lovers exploring as well!

While they do have a website https://les-coupons-de-saint-pierre.fr/en nothing can beat the in-person experience.

Find it Coupons Saint Pierre at 1 Pl. Saint-Pierre, 75018 Paris https://maps.app.goo.gl/FENQUnrWzsnbvhfE9

Marché Saint-Pierre

Oh wow, there are 5 levels of fabric at Marché Saint-Pierre! The store which was established in 1920 has a wide range of materials, some precut lengths and the rest available by the meter.

While you could explore their online store https://www.marchesaintpierre.com/ does anything beat exploring in person?

Find it Marché Saint-Pierre 2 Rue Charles Nodier, 75018 Paris https://maps.app.goo.gl/uJqwrardPsiCE8zC8

Ultramod Mercerie Paris

Closer to the centre of the city Ultramod is a place for haberdashery, trim, buttons and millinery supplies. It is not possible to shop online at this treasure trove so in-person is a must!

The store is split over two locations and each has its own goodies one for haberdashery and millinery in that other.

Find Ultramod Mercerie at 3 and 4 Rue de Choiseul, 75002 Paris https://maps.app.goo.gl/BQDWzS3vGrNDZE7v5

T-shirt dress – Literally

Looking to create the ultimate casual dress, semi fitted, stretchy, sleeved with high neck with protection from some sun the first thought that sprung to mind was a tshirt dress… literally.

Starting with two preexisting tshirts meant already finished seams but also a great chance to develop some upcycling ideas. To get enough length for the skirt it started with the largest size that could be found and a medium that was the best size to fit across the bust.

Cutting the smaller size to waist length with enough extra for seam and allow for slight blousing. The larger shirt was cut across below the neckline then to the hem. Closing up the sides using the existing hem before joining the bodice to skirt.

To pull in the waist, keeping with the use of only one machine in this case an overlocker, elastic was secured on the seam.
