Waverley Mills Recycled Wool Craft Pack in Know Me 2109

Waverley Mills invited us to take on the challenge of creating something with their Craft Packs! We loved this project and enjoyed the creativity of taking on this challenge!

Waverley Mills, located in Tasmania, Australia, is the country’s oldest working textile mill, established in 1874. Renowned for its high-quality wool products, the mill specialises in weaving luxurious blankets, throws, and scarves from Australian merino wool, alpaca, and recycled fibres. Committed to sustainability and heritage, Waverley Mills blends traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. The mill operates onsite from raw fibre to finished product, ensuring quality and traceability.

The Craft Packs include 500 grams of recycled wool pieces, from blanket ends to pieces. The recycled wool pack we received had three pieces in it. The mix of fabric and size of the pieces varies from pack to pack.  For the recycled wool pack we created two makes, this Know Me 2109 vest and a jacket for Fergus which you can see here

Fabric: Recycled Wool from Waverley Mills

When we pulled out the pieces from the pack, there were a variety of colours and for this project we used the two pieces that had brown and maroon tones. One of the pieces that included the orange and blue tones looks like it might have been part of a Breezy Throw In Lake which is made from Recycled Wool

It was a tight squeeze but the two pieces were perfect to cut the pieces of the vest.

Pattern: Know Me 2109

We used Know Me 2109 as a base for this make. We were looking for a boxy vest and we were drawn to the curved lines of the pattern. We used the lines of the blanket to quilt with a layer of wadding and poplin as a lining.

The vest was designed with a button closure, but as we wanted to quilt the layers so we bound the outside edge with bias binding and used bias on the inside to finish the armhole. As part of this, we curved the chest so we could do the outside in one smooth line.

We top-stitched the back panel and transformed the front curved shapes into pockets.

Waverley Mills Recycled Wool Craft Pack in Simplicity 1239

Waverley Mills invited us to take on the challenge of creating something with their Craft Packs! We loved this project and enjoyed the creativity of taking on this challenge!

The Craft Packs include 500grams of recycled wool pieces, from blanket ends to pieces. The recycled wool pack we received had three pieces in it. The mix of fabric and size of the pieces varies from pack to pack. For this project, we used one of the three pieces from the Craft Pack, and the help of our furry four legged model!

Fabric: Recycled Wool from Waverley Mills

When we pulled out the pieces from the pack, there were a variety of colours. Two pieces had brown and maroon tone, and this piece, featured a grey background with bold mustard check.

We didn’t realise when we decided to create Fergus a jacket out of it, this piece was actually part of a grid Recycled Wool Pet Blanket – what a perfect match!

The piece wasn’t quite big enough, so we dug into our stash and found a mustard corduroy to combine with the blanket, which also drew out the colour.

Pattern: Simplicity 1239 Dog Jacket

We have started a few jackets for Fergus and have been exploring a few patterns. We like this one because it is all-in-one and can be easily secured with a press stud at his chest and stomach.

We created the jacket by cutting the fabric and quilting it by layering the wool, bamboo batting and poplin lining.  We used the grid lines of the wool as the guide for the stitch lines of the quliting. From there, we tried it on our (wagging and wiggly) model to check the shape and position of the curves and change the curves slightly before binding the edge with corduroy bias.
