Christmas Me Made Outfits 2024

This year, we took our Christmas outfit game to a whole new level — well, more accurately, Audrey did. Every year, our family Christmas dinner is a chance to channel our Nan’s tradition of creating festive outfits for the whole family. It’s a nod to her legacy, and we’ve kept the tradition alive with something handmade for the occasion.

But this September, Audrey threw down the ultimate challenge. She casually said, “You know how you all wear matching outfits? What if ALL of us matched this year?” Game. On.

We dove into fabric hunting mode, shared a few options in the family group chat, and the clear winner emerged: a cheerful red and white gingham from Birch. Next up, everyone shared their vision for their Christmas ensemble, and we hunted down the perfect patterns on the Sewdirect Australia website.

What followed was a marathon of stitching: 10 garments, a mix of our tried-and-true patterns and some exciting new styles. By the time we were done, the sewing machines deserved a rest as much as we did!
Wishing you a Christmas as merry and love-filled as our matching outfits!🎅🎁✨

Simplicity 9886 in Gingham from Marché Saint-Pierre at Derby Day

Derby Day is here!  Erin cannot seem to buck the trend of wearing gingham on this black-and-white-themed day.

Pattern: Simplicity 9886

Simplicity 9886 is a fitted colour-block dress that has a bodice with princess seams and bust darts. We created this version with the longest skirt length and without the sleeves. You can find this pattern on the Sewdirect website here.

Fabric: Black and white Cotton Gingham

When Erin was visiting Paris she went to Marché Saint-Pierre and found this great pair of matching gingham in different scales which was perfect for her love of gingham for Derby Day. Then the great debate come as to which scale gingham to place in which panel.

Holiday Wardrobe: McCall’s 7695 with Vogue 1961 in Linen from The Fabric Store

Summer in Scotland 🌧 It is warmer in Melbourne this week than it has been in Scotland – so this jacket and pants have been worn on repeat!

The jacket has two layers of bamboo/cotton batting quilted in between two layers of linen. We wanted the jacket to have a similar shape to a bomber jacket, so we added elastic around the cuff and two lines of elastic around the waist 🧥

The Patterns

This Palm/Pletsch pattern is no longer in print but we love the simple lines of the puffer jacket and vest it has.

We used the pants of Vogue 1961 that has two tucks in the front with a slanted pocket and fly front with lock stitch hem.

Know Me 2016 in Super Cheap Floral Cotton Satten

How many versions of Me 2016 do we have? Not enough, no matter the number. This is another one in the collection that we created in Cotton Sateen. The short-sleeve view with the long skirt is for those keeping track of the details.

Pattern: Know Me 2016

Know Me #me2016 is a design by Beaute’ J’adore, it is a dress with a shaped waistline sloping up slightly at the front and lovely design lines in the tiers with gathers. Let us not forget about the scoop pockets in the skirt. It has a high round neckline, bust darts from the sideseam and finished with an invisible back zipper. This pattern is available through Sewdirect Australia here.

Fabric: Floral Cotton Sateen from Super Cheap Fabrics

The cotton sateen creates a lovely, rich finish for a fabric that is 100% Cotton, making it comfortable to wear as a natural fibre. This cotton from Super Cheap Fabrics is a lovely weight, giving lots of body to the skirt and sleeves. Check out the Cotton Sateens on their website.
